Why I Turned In My BlackBerry and Went Android, and I love it

So for those that know me, you all know that I have been a long time BlackBerry user. I’ve been through four devices in the last 5+ years and I have loved my BlackBerrys over the years. Last month, I left all of that behind and deiced to jump on the Android wagon and got a T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide. This so far has been a big change for me but, one that I am still very happy with. So why did I leave my BlackBerry behind and move to Android? I wanted something new. My BlackBerry Curve 8900 was over a year and a half old and was due to be replaced. I loved the device and very much considered upgrading to the Bold 9700. The main reason I didn’t stay with BlackBerry was the lack of what I saw of innovation for the future. The BlackBerry is a great platform but, it hasn’t changed much in the 5 years I’ve used it. Sure there have been system updates but, the OS still very much is the same as it was. That’s where Android interests me. Android is 100% Open Source and thanks to the new App Inventor launched today by Google, anyone can write their own Android App. This is what makes me feel that Android is where the mobile phone platform is moving.

Several of my friends have already asked me why I didn’t get the iPhone 4 which came out roughly the same time I got my MyTouch 3G Slide. There are several reasons why I didn’t get it. 1.) It’s only on AT&T. I’ve had T-Mobile for almost 10 years. AT&T doesn’t come close to offering the same service I have now. 2.) iOS is a closed platform. You are locked to only getting your apps from the App Store and only those apps approved by Apple. 3.) The device in my mind is restrictive. There is only one model to pick from and all you can choose is the size. Don’t get my wrong, the iPhone is a nice phone but, it’s not what I am looking for.

I read an interesting article today on All Things Digital by Louis Gray entitle,  Why I Turned In My iPhone and Went Android. Though I left BlackBerry behind instead of an iPhone, I think the comparison is still very similar. I want something that will continue to grow and be developed. Something that even I could create my own app to do what ever I need it to do. I need a phone that I can truly make mine. So for those looking for a new phone, get an Android. You won’t be disappointed.

June Update and First BlackBerry Mobile Post

Well, I am going to try something new, blogging from my BlackBerry while I sit at the pool thanks to WordPress for BlackBerry.

Things have actually been somewhat busy here. At work, we just finished the 2009 Summer Complimentary Ticket Distribution for Cast Members and things are slowing down again. I celebrated my 27th birthday on June 25 at Jelly Rolls with a great group of friends and this past week, spent a great day in the parks with my friend Chris and his girl friend Nicky from DC. Just relaxing tonight. For those that want more updates, I suggest following @websteth on Twitter as I post there several times a day. Now that I have the app on my BlackBerry, may be I will blog here more too.

Until next time, I leave you with the view from the deck chair.

NYC for the Weekend

Well, I am blogging from 10,000 feet up (even though this will post when I land) on my way back to Orlando from a 3 day weekend trip to New York City with the family. My brother Tim is currently working on his Masters of Fine Arts at Hunter College so Mom, Dad and I took the weekend to go visit.

Despite some rain, the trip was a lot of fun visiting several museums free of charge thanks to working for TWDC (American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art) in addition to the Metropolitan Museum of art. In addition to museums, we also met up with my cousin Stephanie, who also lives in NYC. Overall, it was a great trip but, it reminded me of how much I missed London and how much I want to get back over there even for a short visit.

One more day off then back to work on Tuesday. Finally getting used to having Sunday/Monday off. My next mini vacation will be a quick overnight in St. Pete for a lifeguarding class at Eckerd College next weekend then its Orlando until September.

Well, time to sign off for now.

Thanksgiving at the Beach

Well, I am relaxing on the beach here in Naples, FL working on a tan. Looking out int the Gulf of Mexico and a small pod if dolphins are playijng just off shore. So close that you could probably walk out to them.

I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. I arrived down to Naples early Tuesday evening to join my grandparents, aunts, uncle and cousins for the holiday. It’s a quick visit though as I will be heading back home tonight to Orlando so I can go to the office in the morning, small sacrifice to take the holiday off. It will be nice and quiet and I can catch up on some work and print part of the Main Entrance Pass and United Way distributions.

Work is going well, as you see above, we have kicked off the distributions and the production of close to 500,000 tickets with in the next few weeks. Candlelight starts this weekend with my first performance this year next Wednesday, November 28 at the 6:45/8:15 shows. I can’t believe this will be my forth year singing!

Well, I’m off to enjoy my last few hours down here before heading home. Thanks to everyone who has been sending messages.

Mobile E-mail Solutions

Ok, I thought I would change a little on what I normally post about and talk about something completly different. With the release of Apple’s iPhone on AT&T Wireless, a lot of people have asked me what my opinion is on the device since I am a self proclaimed BlackBerry (read: CrackBerry) addict and if I would be switching over to the iPhone any time soon. I thought I would share my thoughts on the site and see what others had to say.

BlackBerry E-MailLet’s start with the time tested BlackBerry. The BlackBerry is a staple in almost any corporation here in the United States. It allows an instant connection with not only your e-mail but also access to the internet and allows for the downloading of third-party applications that can pretty much do anything from a simple game of solitaire all the way up to a rocking RSS Freed reader that can deliver instant news updates from my favorite sites. Another unique feature of the BlackBerry is what RIM (Research in Motion) calls PIN messaging. Unlike SMS (Text) messaging, PIN messaging allows users on BlackBerry Devices send messages directly to another users device by using their unique PIN tag that is tied to each device. The PIN is also how the network/e-mail services track which device gets which e-mail in case you are out of range when the messages come in. PIN messaging is no extra charge and BlackBerry even provides a free instant messenger like client for PIN – PIN messaging. This is great when a lot of your friends/co-workers have BlackBerry Devices.

iPhone E-MailNow, I have to say from the experience I have had with the iPhone, it is an amazing device. The screen is amazing and vibrant with color, something that BlackBerry does lack, and has an amazing set of tools for e-mail, internet, and music. While the iPhone has a great application for internet and mail (Safari for internet and Apple Mail for Mail), where I feel the iPhone looses out is the whole instant e-mail and the lack of a keyboard. Don’t get me wrong folks, the touch screen and the whole “flip through pages with your finger” is light years ahead of the old BlackBerry Track wheel, I feel that the whole touch keyboard just isn’t worth me switching. I can use two hands to type on the BlackBerry and type an entire paragraph in no time but, with the iPhone, I am limited to just one finger at a time and it really slows down text entry in my opinion. Try using two fingers and you lock up the keyboard. Also, where the BlackBerry is known for it’s instant e-mail, the iPhone simply has an instant on connection that is checking for mail every set number of minutes. Not that that is a HUGE issue but it’s not as fast as instant 🙂

It is the lack of a real keyboard and true push-mail that make me not want to give up my BlackBerry anytime soon. Would I turn down an iPhone, no. I just wouldn’t go from a BlackBerry to one anytime soon. With the new BlackBerry Curve out, all the features I would want from the iPhone (Music, Movie and Camera) are now on the BlackBerry. Apple’s got a great phone but for me, I’ll just stick with my video iPod and BlackBerry.

Part of this message was composed using my BlackBerry Mobile device.

Somewhere over Texas

Ok, so I an bored out of my mind on the plane right now. The little screen in the seat shows that we are at 38,004 feet and just passing over Austin, TX and my iPod continues to keep me somewhat entertained so, I’ll take this time to right more for my blog on my BlackBerry to be posted when I turn on the radio in LA.

More on the trip. I am heading to Disneyland with four other friends from Disney, my best friend Joe and his friend Ryan and then two of Joe’s co-workers from Epcot Attractions, Brian and Jeff. We are all workaholics in need for a vacation considering that my last real vacation was Disneyland last year.

We are going to be in Southern California for a week, leaving next Monday evening getting back Tuesday Morning. We have more than just Disneyland planned. We are planning to head to Knott’s Berry Farm for their Halloween party thing and spend a day in Los Angles to see the city with a stop in Burbank to visit The Walt Disney Studios. Also in the plans is a trip to the beach to visit my Aunt Susan’s parents in Newport Beach. As you can see, we are maximizing our vacation.

In other news, it is nice to be back at the Magic Kingdom. I am actually back to working a lot, just finished 60 hours last week. Until my status coordinator paperwork goes through, I am doing a mix of relief coordinator and training shifts when means more money for Tom to save.

Well, back to the in-flight entertainment.
